Breeders Crown Heats

Some star performances in the Breeders Crown Heats .... more

Darren Owen summarises the opening night of the Breeders Crown.

The Breeders Crown UK and Ireland heats at Tir Prince made for perfect appetisers for Finals Night with some impressive performances.

The opening heat for the 3-Y-O fillies saw Lyons Lememay pull the field apart with an eleven length success in 2.02.3, following on from her recent North Wales Championship victory. The second heat went two tenths quicker as Rhyds Mystique in the end was kept up to her work to beat Crown Victoria and Rhyds Hokey Cokey.

Rhyds Rock Star set a blistering pace in the first 3-Y-O heat and really poured it on, clocking 2.00.6 with an eleven and half length win.  The winner, according to driver James Haythornthwaite, "is really coming of age now, having been a big weak two year old".  Although winning by less, No Brakes comfortably took heat 2 from Oaks Telstar and Frankie Camden in 2.01.3.  The son of Hasty Hall is a real player going forward to the final.

Brown Eyed Girl followed up her recent Sires Stakes victory with a nice performance, beating Rhys Shoofly by a length and a half in 2.06.0 in heat one of the 2-Y-O fillies Pace.  Ayr Treasure gave Vicky Gill a double when holding on by a head to take heat 2 from Meadowbranch Duchess in 2.08.0.

There was an enquiry into the start of the race when Lyons Bullet and Lyons Rosella started in the incorrect positions, however the placings were allowed to remain with the former taking her place in the final.
Merrington Movinup comfortably landed heat 1 of the 2-Y-O Colts Pace, making it four wins from as many starts.

The most thrilling race was the second heat which brought together Matticulous and Rhyds Star Quality for the second time at Tir Prince, and the talented Teddy Camden, a promising second at Musselburgh.
There was quite a pace set by Teddy Camden with Matticulous following him ever step of the way, this left Rhyds Star Quality some ten lengths adrift through the first half mile. At the business end Teddy Camden led them into the straight with Matticulous challenging on the outer and Rhyds Sar Quality, having closed on the final circuit, challenging against the pegs. Towards the finish Rocker Laidler and Matticulous asserted to collect by a length in 2.03.0, and in doing so setting up an intriguing final.

Away from the Breeders Crown the RGB Webster Crock Of Gold Heat was run at a steady early pace but that certainly lifted through the final quarter with Coalford Tetrick, who made all from barrier one, clocking 1.57.6, booking his ticket for the Group 1 Final with a two length success from Party At The Spa, with Lyons Mischief another half a length away in third and Mickey Camden fourth.

Breeders Crown Finals night at Tir Prince is set to get underway at 6-30, with 10 races on the card, including a Battle of the Big Guns race.
The Breeders Crown Finals ballots will take place at 4-30 on Facebook Live from the track.
The fastest four in each division will draw for the front line, with the other four finalists drawing for their barriers on the second line.
