Sire Stakes Night at Tir Prince

A drama filled night at Tir Prince ... more

Once again Darren Owen's reports back on the night's racing

TIr Prince staged an eight race card with drama aplenty on Tuesday night, including a disqualification, two races that were forced to stop due to falls and horses coming out with wrong numbers causing confusion for this writer who was an extremely exasperated race caller at the time.

However, on the positive front there were some excellent equine performances, including a track record.  The Sires Stakes seems to be struggling this year to attract decent field sizes and only two pacers faced the gate for the 2-Y-O Colts and Geldings Championship.  Matticulous may be in the shadow of his illustrious Champion half-brother Miraculous, but who's to say this fella won't be following in his footsteps?  Well, he's going in the right direction, and as with his famous relative, won this championship pace.  Despite not being hard pressed by his rival Georgie Camden, who incidentally performed with credit, Matticulous broke the juvenile track record, recoding 2.01.8.
The winner was making it two wins from three starts and this was his first outing for his current stable, after the race winning driver Rocker Laidler said, "he takes a strong hold".  The reinsman also confirmed that next week's Breeders Crown and the Vincent Delaney are firmly on the agenda.

The distaff juvenile championship in the Sires Stakes series was won nicely by Brown Eyed Girl in 2.05.2 from the promising Lyons Bullet.  The winner is owned by a syndicate, which includes Richard and Jacqueline Gill, with the spokesperson being the man of the moment Bobby Barry!

The NWHOA 3-Y-O Fillies Championship over a mile and a quarter went to Lyons Lememay and Michael O'Mahoney, winning in 2.37.3 by a length from Rhyds Hokey Cokey.  The Colts and Geldings version had to be restarted after Tyrion Hanover came down after over half a mile, bringing Rhyds Rock Star to a standstill.  In the rerun James Haythornthwaite fired Rhyds Rock Star from Barrier one, making all having set a scorching pace. He was taken on by Springhill Glory but Patrick Kane's partner could not keep up the pace and ultimately weakened on the final circuit. The winner's time was 2.31.7 after beating No Brakes and All Good Hanover by three lengths and two, with a mile rate of 2.01.4.  Both Tyrion Hanover and Richard Haythornthwaite were fine after the drama.

The Aged Trot saw Sire Pazenais produce a nice clear round in the hands of Paul Mather, Jnr, proving a one-two for the stable as Show Business took second ahead of the rallying Belle De Neulliac in third.  The 3-Y-O Trot was a dual for most of the way, one which went to Elle Du Loir who mastered Eldivina D'Esge by a length and quarter, with Eviza Du Poitou hinting at a bit of ability, despite being sixteen lengths away in third.  Both the front two look to be in the top division in this sphere, with the winner now making it two wins from two starts at the North Wales venue.

There was drama at the first bend of the Preferred Pace when Second Affair broke, causing Lakeside Ronaldo to fall and Elsa Camden unseat Willie Greenhorn and come to a standstill.
All horses and drivers walked away after the incident.  So, minus the aforementioned trio, seven pacers went in the rerun, but controversy followed as the Starter and Stewards stated the fast time first past the post Rhyds Design had started in the wrong place so was disqualified, with the race awarded to Sun Glasses Ron.

The opening Maiden was won with authority by the Dewi Lloyd Davies owned and Teresa Haythornthwaite trained Rhyds Nightlife, who was steered by Alan Haythornthwaite to score by four lengths in 2.03.3
