History

The Ceredigion Trotting Club was established in June 1996 when five keen owners and followers came together to bring the sport of harness racing closer to home.

In time, this would mean an increase in the number of races held in the county per year and ensure that supporters wouldn’t have to travel across country to follow the sport.

Euros Lewis, Chairman, Heulwen Bulman, Secretary, the late Jos Davies, Treasurer, Henry Bulman and Ken Davies, committee members began meeting on a regular basis and the first task was to find a suitable field to hold race meetings. Thanks to the late Mr Ieuan Jones, Rhydyfelin, a suitable field was found at Tan y Castell and the first meeting was held on 28th June 1997 with prize money totalling £7,130. 111 horses entered these races and a grand final was held for a first prize of £1,000 sponsored by M J Wilcox, Brownhills, West Midlands. The winning horse was Milo’s Creator, owned and trained by Meirion Davies of Capel Dewi, Aberystwyth and driven by Roy Wilson. S4C brought a camera along to film highlights which were shown on the popular Rasus programme and in years to follow, this developed into broadcasting live coverage at the race meetings.

Following this incredibly successful day, it was agreed to stage annual race meetings at Tan y Castell to find future grand final winners.
