S4C is set to broadcast extensive live coverage of Rasus Tregaron on Bank Holiday weekend – Saturday and Sunday, 25 and 26 August.
And the former winner of the Welsh Classic, the pinnacle race of the racing harness festival, can’t wait to join the Channel’s team of expert commentators and pundits for one of the biggest trotting meetings in Britain.
Megan Taff won the ‘Classic’ twice in 1997 and 1999 and she knows how special the race and the weekend is to the sport’s drivers and supporters.
Megan joins Ifan Jones Evans, Dot Davies, Hywel Davies, Wyn Gruffydd and Raymond Jenkins to host coverage of the festival of harness racing, which also includes other big races such as The Little Welsh Dragon and the Strata Florida Cup. Rasus’ experienced presenter, Dai Jones, also returns to host S4C’s coverage of the thrilling weekend of harness racing.
“I’m really looking forward to Rasus Tregaron – this is the most exciting harness racing festival in my eyes. It’s only Musselburgh in Scotland that can be compared to it and Tregaron is different because it is held in the middle of the countryside,” explains Megan from Llangernyw near Abergele and who retired from racing two years ago.
“The racing track on Dolyrychain farm’s land is one of the best, but you have to be a driver of the highest standard to succeed as the land is quite soft. The only way to succeed is to have a good level of fitness and make sure that you do your homework,” adds Megan, who won with horses Disraeli Force in 1997 and Saunders Celestial in 1999.
“It’s a wonderful challenge – but the support is also special, especially if you’re Welsh! And the wave of drivers, coaches, supporters and horses from Ireland, Scotland and Northern England adds to this unique atmosphere.”
For harness racing fans it’s been quite a tough season with the wet weather forcing meetings to cancel. So there’ll be a lot to look forward to at Tregaron.
“Since retiring from the sport, I’ve found it difficult to watch from the sidelines, so it will be great to keep busy commentating and analysing the racing at Rasus Tregaron.”
During the live broadcasts, the team will present items on Meadowbranch – one of Ireland’s most famous harness racing stables – and Portmarnock racetrack on the outskirts of Dublin, where Rasus Tregaron was held in 2001 due to the foot and mouth outbreak. The team will also pay homage to Tregaron Club Chairman Huw Evans and his family and their recent incredible feat when Huw and his children Rhys and Anwen all won races on the same day.
Megan adds, “I think Rhys will be one to look out for in Tregaron and is set to challenge the drivers from Ireland. He’ll definitely have great support as I had here over the years.”
You can watch all the action on the TV but NOTHING beats being there to experience the excitement and exhilaration of this wonderful event.
Enjoy a fun day out with the family
